I left for Nepal Wednesday night, November 14th, after teaching half a class and leaving the rest in the capable hands of my friend Dr. Pat Tobey. I met up with many of my traveling companions at LAX, and when we got to Bangkok's new airport, there is a treat I highly recommend to future: Hour and a half Thai massage for about $30 USD. By the time we we airbound to Kathmandu, I felt rested and refreshed.
The Himalayas were extraordinary, hard to grasp in scale other than the whiteness of the snow being brighter than what was typical in the Rockies or Sierras. Yet here, most of the peaks were above 20,000 feet.
The airport and city were frenetic. This is where having a guide and being among a group has definite advantages. A.D. is a familiar face to Jeffrey, Ellen, and Jane, who are all returning to a beloved place. A.D. navigates the luggage for the fifteen of us and gets it loaded on a bus.
A few of our group have not been to a Third World country before. The noise, grit, and mix of motorbikes, honking vehicles, random cows, pedestrians, and stray dogs abound.
