We are deposited on a quieter street at the Raddison Hotel. Clearly this caters to tourists and the Nepali elite. While most encounters with the locals are favorable and the Nepalese people are friendly, there is a certain obsequiousness in a hotel of this nature that always jars me.
After cleaning up, a group of us traipse into Thamel, the heart of shopping and tourism. The streets are broken and full. We then had dinner at Kirin's sister's house. There were perhaps 20 or more family members including Madave Ghimire, the namesake of the foundation. He is in his 80s and very lively. The food was amazing, including lentils, potatoes and rice. Birthday cake was served first in honor of Ellen.
Kirin's husband is an excellent host. He was bouncing around and very engaging with his stories. I was deliriously tired, and we eventually walked back to our hotel through the quiet and exceptionally dark streets.
